Nothing says Cinco de Mayo like a plate of nachos and a round of margaritas! For real. And now that the weather is finally warm again, more and more people are vaccinated, and the patios are open, it’s time to seek out the best margaritas around town. And even if you miss Cinco de Mayo because you have, say, yet another Zoom meeting, you can always hit up these places for a standard Taco Tuesday happy hour all summer long. Here are some of the best places to go for margaritas in Kansas City.
Ponak’s Mexican Kitchen & Bar
This one was Aunt Jan’s pick. No one knows margaritas (and enchiladas) like Jan. She replied to my inquiry within seconds. Okay, minutes, but only because she has to squeeze some work into her Friday afternoon. Ponak’s has been in KC for more than 45 years, and they brag that their Cuervo margarita will knock you flat on your back. Perfect.
Okay, admittedly this one is a chain, but it’s a fun one. With more margaritas than you thought were possible, including a limited time Frozen Blackberry ‘Rita, this Plaza establishment also offer commemorative cups and swirls of lime and strawberry juice.
Offering a huge range of margaritas, mojitos, sangria, and specialty drinks, El Patron is another authentic Mexican restaurant located on Southwest Boulevard. Their menu starts at the hippest of appetizers, then skims over some tacos and burritos before diving into traditional Mexican dinners like tamales, chimichangas, and a few dishes that I can’t pronounce but sound delicious. Plus does anything say Kansas City Mexican cuisine like brisket enchiladas? Sign me up.
With four locations in Independence, Lawrence, Prairie Village, and Olathe, there’s bound to be a Salty Iguana near you. I’m not convinced that this place has the BEST margaritas, but if you’re looking for a round of drinks and yummy Mexican food, this is a great place to go.
Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant
Though the original Margaritas is down on Southwest Boulevard, it’s now branched out to four additional locations, in Lenexa, Liberty, Martin City, and up north on North Oak Trafficway. Though the happy hour specials are currently unavailable, restaurant dining is, and the house lime margaritas sound delicious. And if you’re not quite ready to venture out into germ-infested restaurants just yet, their salsa is sold in most local grocery
You cannot beat this location at 16th and Broadway. The Ruby Rita sounds good, the Strawberry Margarita sounds good, but the Volcano Margarita sounds absolutely amazing. And during happy hour, 4 to 8pm Mondays through Wednesdays, house margaritas are only $6.
Another chain, but in my opinion, which is the only one that matters at this moment, Jose Pepper’s is worth sacrificing your soul for. Pro tip: whatever you order, have it topped with their espinaca dip. I’d eat it three meals a day, seven days a week, were I not concerned for my girlish figure.
Not your average Mexican joint, but Taco Republic’s unique street tacos definitely get the job done. And with six different margaritas on the menu, plus a flight of tequilas, mixed drinks, and draft and bottled/canned beers, everyone can find their drink of choice. And you can order it with a house-infused Serrano pepper?! Sounds deadly, but in a good way. Their elotes are pretty good, too.
This Westport establishment is closed from May 15th until further notice. Which means… they’re open on Cinco de Mayo??! But there’s lots of curbside pickup and carryout ordering in the meantime. It all looks good to me—especially the flan!
Located in Midtown, Sol Cantina has a pretty great happy hour. Lots of tequila, lots of margaritas, and lots of beer. Plus nachos, tacos, quesadillas, fresh chips, and a spacious outdoor patio.
If you’re looking to pregame a 7 year-old’s birthday party, then Chelly’s Café is the place to go. Big margaritas that come in all flavors, from banana to pina colada to peach to mango to sangria.
I love a good margarita, but I’m starting to wonder if my list is incomplete. Which means it’s up to you to prove me wrong. So I’m giving you permission: Go ahead, go margarita hopping. Don’t rest until you find the best one KC has to offer. It’s your duty. Also, for some career advice, check out our website at https://www.chiefofstaffkc.com. Here’s a hint: Don’t consume an excessive amount of margaritas the night before your next job interview.
