Ahh yes, burnout. Chances are you’ve heard of it. With the pandemic close behind in our rear-view mirror, you may have encountered burnout in the past few years. Regardless of when or where it may happen, this begs the age-old questions…How can I avoid burnout and create work-life balance? Here are 5 steps to navigating burnout.
1. Set priorities in your personal and professional life
Sit down. Think about your non-negotiables. Determine what brings you joy and fulfillment. Outline what responsibilities you need to meet to successfully achieve your goals.
2. Set boundaries
Now that you have identified your priorities, you can create clear distinctions between your work and personal time. This could look like:
- ending your work every day by 5:00
- creating a space dedicated for work (if you WFH)
- only answering calls/emails during work hours
- consistently exercising after work
- blocking off time before work to have a peaceful morning
Create firm boundaries for yourself and commit to them. We know this is easier said than done, so consistency is key.
3. Set small achievable goals that lead you to reaching larger goals
Think about where you want to be in your professional life. Now , work backwards. Break your goals down into bite-sized steps you know are achievable. Celebrate the small victories and incorporate strategies to stay motivated at work and home. This will set you up for success.
4. Keep an updated schedule
Having a schedule creates structure. Structure helps you manage your time efficiently. Keep an updated schedule for work, personal life, and other responsibilities. Stick to it as much as possible. Prioritize important tasks, but remember to allocate time for self-care and relaxation.
5. Create new life experiences
Switch up your routine every once in a while. According to a study published in the esteemed Nature Neuroscience journal, it was determined that individuals who engage in new experiences tend to have elevated levels of happiness. If possible, try walking or cycling to work if you live close by and usually drive. Spice up your commute by listening to a new podcast or an audiobook. Try something new each month, like:
- going to a pottery class
- visiting a local museum
- attending live music
- making a new recipe
- revisiting an old hobby
Reignite a passion you can foster outside of work.
The takeaway? Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for our overall well-being and happiness. Remember who you are, what motivates you, and what bring you joy. Keep systems in place that work for YOU. Stay patient with yourself and take these small steps towards navigating burnout and creating work-life balance.
