We’re living in a strange state of limbo right now, aren’t we? Some people are vaccinated, some aren’t, some are ready to move on with their lives and get out and about, and some aren’t. The world is changing fast and whether you’re prepared for it or not, a nice compromise might be a food truck. It’s outdoors, but yet still social. And food trucks still have some pretty eclectic and high-end food. Here are some of the best food trucks in Kansas City. And there are so many, so forgive me if I’ve forgotten your favorite!
Pie Five Pizza Truck
Sometimes a food truck offers limited options, maybe a small fraction of their typical menu. Not the case with Pie Five Pizza’s food truck. You can still choose your crust, crispy thin to traditional Italian to gluten free. And a huge variety of veggie toppings, sauces, cheeses and meats. Not to mention some tasty add-ons like bread sticks or cinnamon sticks.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it a million times: if it weren’t for wings, I’d never have survived college. If the tater tots, Buffalo tacos, and fried fruit pies aren’t intriguing enough, what about the stuffed chicken wings Street Wings sells? That’s right, bone-in chicken wings stuffed with an endless range of ingredients, from ham and pineapple to risotto to jambalaya to brisket. And all kinds of wing sauces and rubs: Buffalo, parmesan garlic, Irish red, Honey Wheat Habanero, and much more.
You guessed it, waffles! The menu seems to change daily, but at The Waffler, you can expect some variation of chicken and waffles, flavored liege waffles, cheddar broccoli, avocado toast, and orange waffle balls.
Miranda’s Mexican Food Truck
Serving tacos, flautas, huaraches, and street tacos, Miranda’s Mexican Food Truck also offers up quesadillas, chicken wings, and…French fries? Worth checking out! Plus, bottled water and Mexican soda!
There are a few shaved ice trucks roaming around Kansas City, but Kona Ice is one of the originals. And they can usually be found in several locations, from Clay County all the way to Leavenworth. It’s a perfect cherry on top for your neighborhood shindig, your child’s birthday party, or your company’s Friday afternoon happy hour.
Boasting family recipes handed down from Grandma, SSaaCC Lunch makes everything fresh daily, meaning that the menu changes every day. But you’re probably looking at soup, a full sandwiches—everything from BLTs to meatball subs to grilled cheese. And when I say grilled cheese, I’m talking five different types of cheese on that bad boy. Plus they throw in a cupcake.
Taste of Brazil
With traditional recipes inspired by the City Market-based restaurant owner’s moms, Taste of Brazil serves sandwiches and platters with shredded chicken, pork sausages, pot roast, or ham. Simple foods with big Brazilian flavors!
Bop N’ Bowl
A fusion of American cuisine and Korean specialties, Bop N’ Bowl offers familiar flavors with some Korean flair. A variety of yummy salads, wraps, and bowls with noodles or rice, chicken or pork or beef, crisp, fresh veggies, sliced eggs, and traditional Korean sauces.
Taste of Kansas City BBQ & Grill
What’s a food list in Kansas City without some barbeque? And Taste of Kansas City BBQ & Grill has all the BBQ favorites: low and slow smoked ribs, brisket, chicken, and burgers. And seasoned fries. It’s comfort food for your native Kansas Citian.
Please note that this list is probably incomplete. The overhead for a food truck is a lot less than opening a new restaurant, so there are so many food trucks. Plus, they tend to appear and disappear quickly, so check out the website before you go search for the truck. Also, for some career advice, check out our website at https://www.chiefofstaffkc.com.
