Whatever your goals are, there are a few key steps that you can take to make sure you achieve the success and fulfillment you crave. Here’s how to make the upcoming year a success.
Take Control
Your career is yours and no one else’s. You can’t blame anyone else for your mistakes, failures, or shortcomings. Think about what you want to achieve and look at how to get there. If you hit a roadblock, make the necessary adjustments, solve the problem, and power through. That might mean accepting that you’re not a good fit for your current job and pursuing a new one or asking for what you want at your current job.

Once you set your goals, stay the course. This doesn’t mean burying your head in the sand until you accomplish something—it means have a vision, adjust your path when you need to, and have the confidence that you can achieve the goals through time and effort. You have priorities and you know what you want, so stand up for it. Advocate for yourself, communicate your needs and wants and do everything in your power to achieve it.
Nurture Your Network
You can’t do this alone. Invest time and energy in developing engaged, empowering relationships that are built on trust, honesty, integrity, and common values. Seek advice, find a mentor, and see if there’s some way that you can have a mutually beneficial exchange of favors. In other words, don’t just add phone numbers and email addresses to your collection of contacts and call it a network. Check in with all those people from time to time and nurture that network.
