Best of KC: DONUTS

Best of KC / August 16, 2018

Okay, the summer’s winding down. It’s still blazing hot out there, but I think it’s safe to start thinking about how you’re going to pack on some additional insulation for the upcoming frigid temps. And the answer to that is…donuts! I know, I know, my mouth’s watering already. Here are some of the best donuts in Kansas City.

Fluffy Fresh Donuts

After a lifetime on the east coast—donuts galore!—the first donut shop I visited when I moved to Kansas City was Fluffy Fresh at 10123 State Line Road. Fitting because my husband had fond memories of Sunday morning trips there with his dad. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but it’s totally worth the trip. This family-owned establishment is full of donut veterans—the best of the best of their pastries are usually sold out before 8AM, so it’s best to get there early. They boast traditional flavors—chocolate, cinnamon, and Bavarian cream—and traditionally low prices!

If Fluffy Fresh carries on the traditional American donut, Beignet, located down in City Market, carries on the French tradition. You can choose between sweet or savory fillings. Sea salt caramel or tiramisu hit the spot when you need something sugary. Or when you want a more substantial snack, you can try blue crab, spicy salmon, or Brie cheese.

Found at 1009 Westport Road, Donutology markets itself as a laboratory and dares customers to choose their donut, then the icing, the toppings, and any drizzles—from caramel to marshmallow. Then they serve it up, hot and fresh, and you can wash it all down with some Roasterie Coffee, Shatto Milk, and lots of other options.

LaMar’s Donuts

Back in 1933, Ray LaMar started perfecting his donut recipes in Kansas City, and he’s earned the reputation as the “Undisputed King of Donuts.” Giving his customers the choice of cake or raised donuts, French cruellers, knots, cinnamon rolls, and much more. Classic flavors, such as cherry, apple spice, Devil’s Food, maple, and powdered sugar keep loyal customers coming back for more, along with toppings like sprinkles, coconut, peanuts, and even M&M’s.

Hana’s Donut Company

Tucked away on the Kansas side, Hana’s Donut Company stays true to its Kansas City roots by pairing menu items with drinks from both Boulevard Brewing Company and Oddly Correct coffeehouse. Try some of the fruit pastries—raspberry, mango, apple, cherry—mini cinnamon rolls, and other unique donut flavors such as blueberry, red velvet, eggnog, and white chocolate glaze with coconut shavings.

Winter is coming, and it’s going to get cold. You’ve only got a few short months to start packing on the pounds, better start now. For more information on finding the perfect job for yourself while you scarf down donuts, check out our website at
